In Search of My Mother’s Smile

In search of my mother’s smile
I stumbled upon my own

fashioned out of longing and regret
yellowed and gummy

lacking a statement
as if my face and mouth
knew my story before I
could say the words
before I
could write it down

in pencil

and erase
the parts that scared me
like,

violence

death

sadness.
